Green Flag Award sites are meeting bees' needs

We are delighted to announce the winning and highly commended Green Flag Award sites who are helping meet bees' needs around the country.

The Green Flag Award in 2015 will celebrate bees and their needs. Supported by Defra and the National Pollinator Strategy, the Award is being presented to Green Flag Award or Green Flag Community Award winning parks and green spaces in England that have made improvements to encourage pollinatorsacross towns, cities and the wider countryside.

Habitat loss is a key factor affecting pollinator population and this award is looking to increase awareness and contribute to improved pollinator-friendly environments.  Applicant sites were required to prove that they are making positive changes to their green spaces that encourage and increase pollinator-friendly habitats and food sources throughout the year.

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, said "Pollinators are vital to the environment and the economy. Bees and other pollinators face a wide range of environmental pressures and some species are threatened because of this. We are thrilled that the 2015 Special Award for Innovation will help to protect our pollinators, whilst celebrating innovation from around the country from our Green Flag Award winners."
